Understanding Weight Gain with Gary Taubes, “Why We Get Fat”

Gary Taubes, author of the new book “Why We Get Fat” is questioning all of the basic assumptions about JSAPA Weight Loss Surgerythat many people have held to for so long—and he is doing so for good reason. According to Taubes, the diet foods many American’s turn to in an effort to lose weight are not helping their weight loss goals, but instead may actually be sabotaging them. Taubes’ text is gaining a lot of attention from the medical community, including television personality Dr. Oz who invited Taubes onto his show to explain his findings about weight loss.

Gary Taubes does not have a secret formula for weight loss. Instead, his approach to weight loss is a simple understanding of nutrition—one that contradicts many existing assumptions about weight loss and keeping a healthy diet. According to Taubes, our lack of understanding towards weight loss stems from two misconceptions:

  1. If you eat fat, you are likely to become fat
  2. Eating too much and exercising too little will cause you to become fat

Like Dr. Cywes, Taubes believes that carbohydrates, such as sugar and starches, are the reasons behind the obesity epidemic in today’s society. He also suggests you eliminate all carbohydrates and eat a diet that is instead rich in meats and vegetables, a message the patients at Jacksonville Weight Loss Center hear every day. Carbohydrates are fattening, and if you are trying to lose weight you should avoid them.

Gary Taubes is an award-winning science writer, and his new book “Why We Get Fat” is available in book stores now.
